Nearly half do not trust Supreme Court to handle Trump immunity case fairly

.

Months of negative coverage of the Supreme Court have left voters skeptical, as a plurality doesn’t have confidence the high court will issue a fair ruling in former President Donald Trump‘s petition for immunity.

In a Politico/Ipsos poll released on Monday, only 24% of adults said they trust the Supreme Court to issue a fair and nonpartisan ruling on the matter compared to 46% who said they do not trust the court. Of those surveyed, 29% said they did not know when asked if they trust the high court.

Among Democrats, the vast majority, 69%, said they do not trust the Supreme Court on the matter, compared to 14% who say they do. A plurality of independents, 47%, said they do not think the court will issue a fair ruling on presidential immunity for Trump, compared to only 24% who said they do trust the court and 27% who were unsure.

Republicans polled were split on the matter, with a plurality, 38%, saying they have trust in the ruling by the Supreme Court, while 35% say they do not know if they trust the high court and 26% saying they do not trust the court to issue a fair decision on the matter.

The Supreme Court has slipped in its approval rating in recent years after decisions in matters such as abortion have caused outrage from the Left.

A Gallup poll from September 2023 shows that the Supreme Court had a net disapproval rating of 58% to 41%, with its approval rating being negative since 2021, according to the pollster.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Trump’s immunity claims on April 25, with a decision expected in the weeks following the oral arguments. It will be the second time this session that the high court has taken up a case surrounding Trump after it struck down efforts to block the former president from the ballot in Colorado.

The immunity claims by Trump are in the former president’s 2020 election subversion case in federal court in Washington, D.C. The trial has been placed on hold until the immunity claims can be resolved. A federal circuit court and federal appeals court have already rejected Trump’s claims.
