Cori Bush’s reparations proposal belongs in the 19th century

.

Congresswoman Cori Bush (D-MO) announced a bill for reparations to descendants of slaves in the country. It was a $14 trillion proposal and even more preposterous than many current recommendations promoted nationwide. And it’s something that no one in the country should ever take seriously.

“HR 40 is the pathway for the governmental framework that will help restore national balance and unity in terms of wealth, healthcare, education, housing, and the criminal justice system. By passing HR 40, Congress can start a movement toward the national reckoning we need to bridge racial divides,” Bush said at a press conference on Wednesday.

WHAT THE GOP WORK REQUIREMENT PROPOSAL WOULD REALLY DO

Her words were utterly ridiculous and resembled something that should have been said in 1866 instead of 2023. Anyone talking about “national reckonings” or reparations today, nearly 160 years after slavery ended, is doing so to stoke racial division, create ethnic animosity, and contribute to the latest production of the Democrats’ political theater of hate. The national reckoning was the Civil War, in which over 625,000 white men died fighting to end the evil institution of slavery.

“The United States has a moral and legal obligation to provide reparations for the enslavement of Africans and its lasting harm on the lives of millions of black people,” Bush said. “America must provide reparations if we desire a prosperous future for all.”

“Reparations are ultimately about respect, reconciliation, and healing, and the hope that one day Americans of all backgrounds can walk together toward a more just future. Congress can start a movement toward the national reckoning we need to build a bridge for racial divides,” Bush added.

Reparations aren’t about respect in any way, and there isn’t any widespread disrespect toward black people because there isn’t a current system of reparations in effect. Sure, some fringe parts of society support racial bigotry, but these atrocious creatures are true of people of all races and are the exception today, not the rule. As mentioned above, Bush’s speech belongs in the 19th century, not the 21st.

Bush’s despicable nonsense of “hope that one day Americans of all backgrounds can walk together” already exists and has for quite some time. She is clinging to the relics of yesterday’s politics to remain relevant in the world of tomorrow.

Our country has worked very hard to atone for the sins of its past — and those efforts exist today. There are a plethora of programs at every level of government that protect people from racism, empower people of all races and backgrounds, and ensure everyone gets the opportunity for representation through initiatives like affirmative action. Bush’s proposal is just weaponized inflammatory rhetoric that should be culturally exiled from society if we are being completely honest. Despite Bush’s claims to the contrary, we do have a prosperous future for all.

Furthermore, like many things Bush claims, these statements are not accurate. Reparations will not bridge any racial divide, and in 2023, we do not need any national reckoning. There aren’t any systemic obstacles for any person of any race that are in place to prevent people from achieving success. Unquestionably, this was not always the case, but in 2023, this isn’t true. Regardless of skin color, background, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. It is up to them to make the most of those opportunities.
