The Bay Area made history this month by crowning its first-ever transgender Miss San Francisco.
Monroe Lace, a biological male who identifies as female, said it has always been a dream to win the title.

“I am literally still in disbelief,” Lace, the first transgender winner in the organization’s 99-year history, told Kron4 News. “This is like such a dream come true. I’ve been dreaming about this since I was 12 years old.”

“When the crown was placed on my head, I was just in shock. … I was literally like, ‘This isn’t real life.'”
The win was a very emotional moment for Lace, who has experienced homelessness and abuse, according to the interview.
“Four years ago, I ran away from home, and I was homeless,” Lace said. “Two years ago, I was assaulted at gunpoint, and, to me, if I’m able to inspire a child who sees me and thinks to herself, ‘I’m going to be okay,’ then I’ve done my job.”

When Lace decided to compete in the Miss America Organization’s competition, the now-Miss San Francisco said competing as “myself” was important.
“I knew there was a little girl out there or little child out there watching me, and I wanted them to know that if I can do it, they can too,” Lace said.
