Director James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” has surpassed his 1997 monster hit “Titanic” to become the the third-highest-grossing film in international box office history.

Cameron’s highly anticipated “Avatar” sequel has brought in $1.5 billion overseas and is on its way to catching up to his original 2009 movie, which holds the top international title after earning $2.1 billion overseas, Variety reported.

Marvel’s huge hit “Avengers: Endgame” is No. 2 all time, having brought in $1.9 billion in ticket sales overseas.

Domestically, “Avatar: The Way of the Water” has earned a total of $636 million following its release 8 weeks ago.

Outside of the “Avatar” sequel making history at the international box office, on a global scale Cameron’s latest film ranks as the fourth-highest grossing movie in history following “Avatar” ($2.92 billion); “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.7 billion); and “Titanic” ($2.19 billion).

The “Titanic” director previously spoke about the fact that his film would have to earn $2 billion to “break even,” as previously reported. However, despite Cameron’s assertion, Variety reports that “analysts believe the threshold to profitability is probably closer to $1.5 billion.”

During a recent appearance on HBO Max’s “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” Cameron talked about the film’s success at the box office, Yahoo.com noted.

“It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break-even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,” Cameron shared. “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.”

“The point is we’re going to be okay,” he added. “I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for ‘Avatar 3,’ which is already in the can — we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film, so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CGI magic.”

Fans can expect to see the third installment in the franchise hit theaters in December 2024, Variety noted.
