Kevin McCarthy says Biden documents discovery highlights ‘hypocrisy’ in government

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says the discovery of more classified documents in President Joe Biden‘s possession from his days as vice president highlights the “hypocrisy” within the federal government.

McCarthy said in an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo Sunday that the way the Justice Department and FBI is handling Biden’s classified documents, compared to how the documents found at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home were handled, shows why the American people do not trust the government.

The Biden administration has been under scrutiny since it was revealed last week that ten classified documents from that Biden-Obama Administration were discovered at the Penn-Biden Center in November 2022. A second batch of classified documents, all but one, were found in the garage Biden’s Delaware residence. Biden’s team alerted the Justice Department to the discovery on Dec. 20.

Biden’s personal counsel also alerted the Justice Department of a third document discovery at his Delaware residence.

“Now we’re finding time and again, a locked garage door that opens and closes with the push of a button,” McCarthy said. “How many years has this vice president, who’s been in office for more than 40 years, had these documents, who’s been in and out of there?”

The president has insisted he is “cooperating fully” with federal investigators and former U.S. Attorney Robert Hur, who U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed to serve as special counsel on the documents.

Biden has lambasted Trump for his classified document scandal, in which over 300 documents were recovered from Mar-a-Lago after the FBI conducted a raid of the Florida estate.

“What’s really concerning to me is how justice is applied,” McCarthy said. “Why do you raid President Trump? His wasn’t just locked, it was padlocked. They knew it was there. They could have come taken it anytime they wanted.”

McCarthy said people should look at how many agents and special counsels have been applied to the documents discovered in Biden’s possession compared to Trump’s.

“This is just hypocrisy,” the speaker said. “I’m tired of this Justice Department that … they utilize it to go after people because they have different political beliefs. That’s what’s wrong with government.”
