A North Lincolnshire village has become a hot spot for possible drug taking and littering.

Part of Crowle, on the Isle of Axholme, looks to have become a place used for drug taking and Anti-Social Behaviour. Humberside Police discovered a large quantity of used Nitrous Oxide canisters in part of the village only two days after a previous clear-up.

The canisters are often used as a method of drug taking by inhaling the substance - also known as laughing gas. Although it isn't illegal in the UK, its use is seen as a form of Anti-Social Behaviour by many. Around 18 canisters were left over the weekend with police discovering the litter on Monday, 12 December. As a result, they are now looking to enforce stricter rules on buying the canisters with local traders and educate schools further to prevent the issue from getting worse.

In a post on social media, the force explained how 'disappointing' the find was. "We have no words here today to describe the disappointment of our findings following last week's rubbish clearance at the location.

"Over 1 weekend alone this is what we find on Monday morning. We have cleaned up AGAIN the disused Nitrous Oxide canisters and disposed of them accordingly.

"Work is ongoing in the area in relation to the supply of products which assist in causing harm to children. We have discussed the law on Proxy sales this morning with Trading Standards and are looking at other ways to educate the children in the area into the dangers of its use.

"Local Schools have been informed and Patrols will continue in the area. Should you have any knowledge on where or who is providing/selling these canisters to our Youths then please contact me on sarah.jackson@humberside.police.uk."

In addition, it also stated just how damaging the drug can be, adding: "Nitrous oxide slows down your brain and your body’s responses, and the effects of the drug varies depending on how much has been inhaled. Heavy regular use of nitrous oxide can lead to a deficiency of vitamin B12 and to a form of anaemia.

"Severe B12 deficiency can lead to serious nerve damage, causing tingling and numbness in the fingers and toes. This can be very painful and make walking difficult. It can even lead to paralysis, and the damage may be lasting."
