Don Bolduc, the Republican candidate for New Hampshire‘s Senate seat, was the target of an intended assault Wednesday night as he entered the venue for his final debate against incumbent Sen. Maggie Hassan (D), according to his campaign.

A man “took a swipe” at Bolduc as he mingled with the crowd outside the New Hampshire Institute of Politics on the Saint Anselm College campus, according to senior campaign adviser Rick Wiley. The gathering included his supporters, Hassan’s supporters, and a group of anti-war activists, who started heckling Bolduc.

The anti-war activists started calling Bolduc “a war criminal,” Wiley told the Washington Examiner. “They were calling him a war criminal. And then one of them must have said something or took a swing at him when he was over there shaking hands with his supporters. … That’s when all hell broke out.”

Bolduc dodged the blow and went inside while police escorted the man away.

“Let’s be clear, this was not a Maggie Hassan supporter at all,” Wiley said. “The guy clearly had a motive. I don’t know why he took a swing at him.”

The Goffstown Police Department did not offer comment Wednesday night.

During the debate, Bolduc briefly mentioned the incident when asked how much politicians need to take responsibility for political violence in light of the attack on Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) husband, Paul Pelosi.

“It’s a sign of political problems,” he said. “Republicans and Democrats that fuel issues with people that get them to the point where they are just so upset at an individual that they strike out. It happened to me outside just before I came in here. This is wrong and it needs to be stopped.”

Bolduc is a retired Army general who served 10 tours in Afghanistan and was awarded two Purple Hearts. He has tightened the polling gap between himself and Hassan, with recent polls showing him within striking distance of flipping the seat.
