Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) has edged out a slight lead over former Republican Attorney General Adam Laxalt in the Nevada Senate race, giving the incumbent her first lead in a major poll since late August.

About 46% of likely voters said they plan to vote for Cortez Masto compared to 44% who said they’d back Laxalt, giving the Democrat a 2-point lead, according to a USA Today-Suffolk University poll. The tight lead is within the poll’s margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.

The most recent numbers mark the first time Cortez Masto has topped Laxalt in the polls since mid-August, when the Democratic incumbent held just a 1-point lead, according to RealClearPolitics.

The race has emerged as a high-profile contest since Republicans view it as a possible opportunity to flip a Senate seat in their favor as they seek to gain control of the upper chamber in November.

Republicans only need to flip one Senate seat and defend all current GOP-held seats in order to gain a majority in the upper chamber.

The updated polling comes after reports last week showing Cortez Masto trailing Laxalt in the polls by 2 percentage points, according to a Nevada Independent-OH Predictive Insights.
