NYC mayor threatens legal action against Texas for migrant buses

On Sunday, New York City Governor Mayor Eric Adams (D) said he is considering taking legal action against Texas for busing migrants to the sanctuary state.

"Our legal team is looking at legal challenges we could do with Texas," Adams told WCBS-TV. "We believe there are some options we have, because when you involuntarily place someone on a bus, we believe that actually skates the law… We're not leaving any stones unturned to make sure that New Yorkers are [not] being treated in an unfair way."

Approximately 11,000 migrants have entered New York City's homeless shelters since May, including 2,500 migrants bused by Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R). Adams said the city's shelters are at their "breaking point."

Adams told WCBS-TV that the city had opened 23 emergency shelters to house the influx of migrants arriving in the city. He said New York would need to open an additional 38.

The mayor told the news outlet that city officials are exploring the legality of temporarily housing migrants in cruise ships.

"We're looking at that. That was something that the previous administrations, the Bloomberg administration, my understanding is they looked at that during the surge and so we're looking at that as a temporary measure, not as a permanent measure. A permanent measure is get people into housing," said Adams.

The New York City mayor called on the federal government for help. He asked for regulation changes to allow migrants to legally work in the United States instead of waiting six months for a work visa.

When asked by WCBS-TV if he would try to stop Texas and Florida from sending migrants to the sanctuary state, Adams said that he is considering all options.

Mayor Adams said, "I think it's really inhumane what we're seeing, using people during a difficult time as a political ploy and not coordinating with cities. Every city that the migrants are passing, the governor of Texas should have communicated with, and he should have communicated with New York. This is a burden on cities for, I believe, for political reasons."

The mayor accused Texas Governor Abbott and Florida Governor DeSantis of attempting to distract the public from political controversies.

Adams told ABC, "This humanitarian crisis was created by human hands, and I believe is a political ploy to overlook some of the things we've done that dismantle human rights, everything from the women's right to choose, to gun control.”
